Can Solid Polycarbonate Sheet Replace Tempered Glass?

Can solid polycarbonate sheet process from polycarbonate sheet replace the tempered glass? With the advancement of the new material market, solid polycarbonate sheet has gradually appeared in construction, decoration and other industries. Because of its good characteristics and rapid development, it can be said that 90% of tempered glass can be replaced by solid polycarbonate sheet. Then let's briefly talk about the difference between solid polycarbonate sheet and tempered glass.

Tempered glass is glass with compressive stress on the surface, also known as strengthened glass. In order to improve the strength of glass, chemical or physical methods are usually used to form compressive stress on the glass surface. When the glass is subjected to external force, it first offsets the surface stress, thereby improving the bearing capacity and enhancing the glass's own wind pressure resistance, cold and heat resistance, impact resistance, etc.

The advantages of tempered glass are as follows.

  • Bending resistance. The strength is several times higher than ordinary glass.

  • High security. When it is damaged by external force, the fragments will become small obtuse-angled particles similar to honeycomb, which are not easy to cause serious harm to the human body.

  • Good thermal stability. The temperature difference (300°C) it can withstand is three times that of ordinary glass.

Tempered glass also has some disadvantages. Tempered glass cannot be cut and bent. Although tempered glass is stronger than ordinary glass, it may self-explode, while ordinary glass does not have the possibility of self-explosion.

Solid polycarbonate sheet is processed from engineering plastic polycarbonate, which has the characteristics of impact resistance and impact resistance. Its strength is hundreds of times stronger than tempered glass and acrylic.

The advantages of solid polycarbonate sheet are as follows.

  • The material is light and easy to carry. The weight is only half that of glass, which saves time and effort for transportation and installation, and facilitates construction management.

  • The impact strength of PC solid sheet is 20 times that of tempered glass, which can prevent falling objects from high altitudes. It is very suitable for greenhouses, channel ceilings, outdoor lighting sheds, carports, awnings, explosion-proof shields, etc.

  • Heat resistance and cold resistance. PC solid sheet has good temperature resistance, and it can adapt to various severe weather changes from severe cold to high temperature, and maintain various physical performance indicators in the range of -40℃to +120℃.

  • The PC solid sheet has strong plasticity and can be bent to a certain arc. It can be cold-bent without heating at room temperature and can be bent into round arches, semi-circular arcs, etc. according to usage scenarios or needs.

Unfortunately, although solid polycarbonate sheet has high impact resistance, it has low scratch resistance, which means that a hard coating has to be applied to polycarbonate sheet, eyewear lenses and exterior automotive parts made from polycarbonate.

In general, PC solid sheet can replace tempered glass. Each has its own advantages, so we can start with the use, budget, etc., and choose the material that suits us.
